Sinopsis

In Concepción Arenal we find what seems to be the key, what unlocks, what manages to give us hope to leave our most intimate prisons, even when we know that it is much more difficult to free ourselves from the prisons or silent pressures we have inherited, being also confined in private spaces of isolation and helplessness that are much more restrictive than the prisons themselves. How can we not imagine ourselves as those who are afraid, as prisoners, as those who lack freedom or suffer servitude, kindling that desire to escape when we feel isolated and imprisoned by moral sadness or abandonment? How can we not remember the prisoners as if we were imprisoned there with them? What Arenal’s words give us is just that: hopeful attempts to escape the multiple prisons that surround us with the consolation of culture, with access to a way of humanity, to an emancipated life based on the training and professionalisation of women, which managed to save many female prisoners and made not only their stay in prison, but their entire lives, lighter and more passable.

Who is Concepcon Arenal?

Concepción Arenal Ponte (Ferrol, 31 January 1820-Vigo, 4 February 1893) was a Spanish legal expert, thinker, journalist, poet and playwright who was a pioneer of Spanish feminism. She has also been considered the forerunner of social work in Spain.

From a young age she had declared her desire to become a lawyer. At the age of twenty-one, in order to enter the Faculty of Law at the Central University of Madrid as an auditor, she had to disguise herself as a man, cut her hair short, wear a frock coat, cape and top hat. When her true identity was discovered, the rector intervened. After a satisfactory examination she was authorised to attend classes, which she did from 1842 to 1845.
